Ladies we Love: The Beauty of Surfing and Yoga

An exceptional assemblage of female surfers and yogis just wrapped up a surfing and yoga themed humanitarian and environmental adventure in Southern India. Lucky for us, they filmed it all.

The resulting documentary, Beyond the Surface, tells the story of Ishita Malaviya, who is forging progress towards gender equality in India as the country’s first female surfer. In the filming process, she was joined by a unique and talented group of women—surfer Crystal Thornburg-Homcy (who dreamed up the mission and will be co-directing and producing the documentary), pro surfer and eco-feminist Lauren Hill, ultimate yogi Kate Baldwin, surfer Emi Koch (who heads the non-profit Beyond the Surface International), and ocean adventurer Liz Clark (who we officially Love).

The Beyond the Surface film crew focused on India because they wanted to explore the environmental and women’s issues there. And, the film’s female team also share a belief in “the undeniable power of surfing to bring joy amongst suffering.” They also happen to shred, making world betterment look like a whole lot of fun.

The film release date is TBD, but we can’t wait to hear the stories and see the images that they discovered on this beautiful journey. In the meantime, check out Beyond the Surface film trailer here. And look for a revealing Q&A on the film with Liz Clark coming soon on WomensMovement.com.
