Prize Money & Podium Boys: La Course by Le Tour de France

If you’ve had enough Tour de France testosterone to last for another whole year, then you’ll be stoked to see that the Tour has added a women’s race stage that will take place on the final day of the tour, this Sunday, July 27th.

The one-day women’s road race, La Course by Le Tour de France, will be held in conjunction with the final day of the Tour de France. A few hours before the men’s peloton arrives in Paris, with live broadcast on France Télévisions and Eurosport International, the world’s elite women cyclists will race the circuit in the historic heart of the city before fighting out a final sprint at the finish line on the Champs-Elysées.

This women’s race event is considered a huge leap towards the goal of a three-week women’s stage race running in conjunction with the main event. The women behind the birth of La Course include Emma Pooley, UK national time trial champion, world and Olympic champion Marianne Vos, world champion Ironman triathlete Chrissie Wellington, and Kathryn Bertine.

“The Le Tour Entier group (LTE), founded by myself, Marianne Vos, Emma Pooley, and Kathryn Bertine are passionate about helping to grow women’s cycling and women’s sport and we have long been convinced that one of the best ways of achieving our mission is to work with the Tour de France, the beacon of world cycling,” says Wellington. “It was wonderful for LTE to have the opportunity to work together with A.S.O to realize our shared passion to continue to grow the sport for the benefit of all. La Course by Le Tour marks a giant step forward for women’s cycling, and one that the athletes, teams and the public around the world will undoubtedly support.”

The Details: 20 teams will take to the start line of La Course by Le Tour de France on 27 July 2014 at 11.45pm (GMT). The riders will complete the circuit marked above on the Champs-Elysées 13 times, covering a total distance of 90 km.

Prize Money & Podium Boys: La Course boasts €22,500 (equal to that of a stage win at the Tour de France for the men) up for grabs for the winner. The prize presentation will take place at 2pm (GMT), and the first-ever winner of La Course by Le Tour de France will grab a few smooches from Podium Boys and be presented with their prize.
