Video of the Week: Unstoppables Documentary

What happens when the unthinkable happens?

The soon-to-be-released, award-winning Unstoppables documentary tells the incredibly inspiring story of a cycling club in Barcelona where many of the riders have experienced life-changing disabilities.

The Pirate’s Team cycling team was started by Juanjo Mendez and Bernat Moreno after Juanjo had a motorbike accident in which he lost his left arm and left leg. After Juanjo endured a serious bout with depression, Bernat convinced him to start pedaling like they did when they were kids.

He did—and Juanjo went on to find a life-altering passion and win six Olympic medals in Paralympic Games.

The film also follows team members and Paralympic cyclists Raquel and Elisa, who lost a leg to cancer and never imagined she could ride again. One day, as she was feeling sorry for herself in her car, Juanjo raced past her while she was stopped at a traffic light. Elise turned to the friend she was traveling with and said, “If I ever feel sorry for myself again, remind me of this moment.”

A few weeks later, Elise found Juanjo and the “Pirates Team” and started cycling. And , after just nine months of training she was one tenth of a second short from winning bronze at the Spanish Cycling Championships in 2012.
