Top 40 Female Athletes of the Past 40 Years

Today, to celebrate the past 40 momentous years of Title IX, the newly launched espnW. debuted its Title IX: Top 40 Female Athletes of the Past 40 Years. The impressive lineup will be unfolded over the next 40 days, athlete by athlete.

The first athlete, featured today, is Fu Mingxia, a Chinese diver who was the youngest world champion at the age of 12 and took Olympic gold at 13 in Barcelona. This legendary woman paved a brighter path for other female athletes from China and across the globe.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Title IX, federal legislation put into play in 1972 that enacted gender equity in sports (and other educational programs) in public and private schools that receive federal funding. This landmark ruling changed the face of women’s sports forever. An excellent reason to celebrate.
