Chanelle Sladics’ 4 Simple Earth Day Ideas

Pro snowboarder and eco activist Chanelle Sladics has some good ideas for the planet. First off, she co-founded reusable glass drinking straw and accessory company Simply Straws with her family. Aiming to nix single-use plastics that spend eons in landfills, Sladics’ company gives a free straw to anyone who joins their #pledgeagainstplasticstraws with @simplystraws every Earth Month (through April 30th).

Second, Sladics devotes a portion of her time to the non-profit Protect our Winters, a non-profit organization that engages the winter sports community to mobilize against global warming. Why is this young shredder so passionate about the environment?

“Because without it we have nothing,” she says. “Nature provides all, so I’m committed to protecting, and nourishing her to the best of my ability. I am so grateful for what this planet provides. I smile everyday to those becoming more and more aware of the changes that are needed to shift out of the toxic environment we have created that is contaminating us.”

We caught up with Chanelle to get her take on four of the most simple and creative ways each of us can make a difference on Earth Day—and every day.
1. REFUSE single-use plastics. You use this once and it lasts thousands of years—change these habits today. #pledgeagainstplasticstraws and we will help you refuse plastic straws. Get reusable utensils, bottles, mugs, straws, bags, etc.

2. Aim to buy organic, non-GMO, local, hormone/antibiotic-free food. It’s best for you, the animals, the plants, and the planet. This move protects your health (cancer prevention), our Earth’s soil, clean water, and oceans.

3. Take public transportation, carpool, or ride a bike.

4. EDUCATE yourself. Here are some awesome documentaries you can find on Youtube, Netflix or iTunes! It’s easier to care and change when you understand where you sit in the big picture.
