Sunscreen season is back with a vengeance, especially for those of us who are active outdoors. Think you’ve got your application process dialed? You might want to think again. These 5 sunscreen surprises had us rethinking our own protocol.

Culled from information provided by the American Academy of Dermatology and Amanda Friedrichs, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist in private practice in Sycamore, Ill., these tips will help you banish the burn (and other unsavory long-term effects) this summer. “People who get sunburned usually didn’t use enough sunscreen, didn’t reapply it after being in the sun, or used an expired product,” said Friedrichs. “It’s important that people take the time to choose an effective sunscreen and properly apply it.”

1. Are you really buying the right stuff? Get religious about reading sunscreen labels before you buy. Friedrichs suggests taking home only those sunscreens that guarantee the following:

           1. an SPF of 30 or higher

           2. water resistance

           3. broad-spectrum coverage (which means it protects you from UVA and UVB rays).

2. Slather on sunscreen a full 15 minutes before hitting the trail, the road, or the water. It takes approximately 15 minutes for your skin to absorb the sunscreen and protect you. If you wait until you are in the sun to apply sunscreen, your skin is unprotected and can burn.

3. Fill up a shot glass. Are you using enough sunscreen? Most adults need at least one ounce of sunscreen, about enough to fill a shot glass—or the amount you can hold in your palm—to fully cover all exposed areas of your body including neck, face, ears, tops of your feet and legs. Apply and rub it in—sunscreen sitting on top of skin will take longer to be absorbed—and be effective.

4. Pucker up. Don’t forget to cover your kisser, too. To protect your lips, apply a lip balm with a SPF of at least 15.

5. Keep it comin’. Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours to remain protected, or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating, plus activities such as kayaking and standup paddle boarding.
