Gear: 3 Best Women’s Base Layers

I recently torture-tested a massive roundup of new women’s base layers for our friends over at GearInstitute.com. Over the course of several icy months, I took these layers skate skiing, running, alpine skiing, snowshoeing, and even cycling. I sweated in them, stretched them, layered them under and over other garments, and even ran each layer through a 10-pull pilling test to determine how they’d hold up over time when faced with everything from ski pant Velcro to your washer’s spin cycle.

The result: we whittled the cattle call down to a select best-of-the-best base layer group. Here on WomensMovement.com, we debut three of the best base layers tested. Bergans of Norway Soleie 150 Base Layer

Bergans of Norway1965_Soleie_Top_Wmns_PrimulaPurpleStripedThe Bergans of Norway Soleie Women’s 150 Base Layer is an ultra-lightweight, 150-gram base layer designed for winter aerobic activities. Made of 100 percent Merino wool, this base layer delivers an excellent warmth-to-sweat management ratio, a performance-oriented longer length, and odor resistance. This base layer is my top choice from this test for outdoor aerobic endeavors such as skate skiing and winter running.

The Soleie has a simple yet highly effective design and, thus, fit. A straightforward crew neck and uncomplicated, body-skimming cut deliver pure no-fuss-no-muss simplicity that puts the onus on performance.

This base layer’s longer length (longer than all other base layers in this test) was one of my favorite features. It does a stellar job of maintaining lower-body warmth and comfort during cold-weather activities—I experienced no backside skin exposure whatsoever, even while running and skate skiing. I also found the Soleie’s 150 single jersey knit wool fabric to be comfortable and somewhat less scratchy than other wool base layers tested. Soft, textured thread contrast seams kept this top from causing any irritation or chafing.

The 150-gram-weight of this base layer is lighter than most others in this test, but it still delivered warmth for all of my aerobic outdoor pursuits. I found this base layer to be a solid choice for winter running, winter biking, snowshoeing, and Nordic skiing. See the full test results for this base layer on GearInstitute.com here.

Icebreaker Ws 200 Oasis Crewe Stripe

icebreaker oasis crewe stripeThe Icebreaker Ws Oasis Crewe Stripe is a lightweight, 200-gram base layer designed specifically for women. Made of 100 percent Merino wool, this base layer’s features include s good warmth-versus-sweat management system, odor resistance, and a slim, sophisticated fit. This base layer is an excellent choice for women looking for a lightweight, wool base layer well suited to cold-weather aerobic endeavors, from Nordic skiing to winter running.

The Oasis Crewe Stripe has an excellent fit, for which Icebreaker has become well known—this top hugs in all the right places. It has a slim fit that’s spot-on for easy layering. It also has an elliptical hem that’s longer in the back for extra coverage during activities plus offset shoulder sleeves that prevent pack rub.

The Oasis Crewe is comfortable, especially for a next-to-skin base layer that’s crafted of 100 percent Merino wool, but I noticed it was slightly scratchier than some other wool base layers I tested. The 200-gram weight of the Oasis Crewe kept me warm for most outdoor pursuits. It was perfect for winter running, snowshoeing, and both skate and cross-country skiing; I used it without a shell on the warmer, sunnier days. Patagonia Expedition Weight One-Piece Suit

Patagonia W Capilene 4 EW One#1DD8C96The Patagonia Capilene 4 Expedition Weight One-Piece Suit is a heavy weight all-in-one base layer designed for cold-weather activities. Crafted of Patagonia’s warm and breathable Capilene 4 fabric, this unique base layer delivers excellent comfort, warmth, and sweat management for alpine skiing and light aerobic activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Unlike the other base layers in this test, the Patagonia Capilene 4 Expedition Weight One-Piece Suit base layer is a stellar choice for cold-weather outdoor activities such as alpine skiing. While it’s not designed for aerobic activities, this unique heavyweight base layer delivers solid comfort, convenience, warmth, and moisture wicking.

This one-piece base layer is fairly easy to slip into and, once it’s on, is very comfortable. It has a body-hugging fit that moved with me (thanks to a touch of Spandex). It also has a side-zip drop bottom for simplicity when nature calls—this must-have feature works very well with plenty of room (and margin for error). The Polartec Power Dry fabric is soft and cozy, with a rib-knit design on the interior and a smooth face on the exterior that affords snag-free layering. This heavyweight base layer is the definition of “warm.” Its Expedition Weight and interior ribbed brushed fleece have a heat-keeping loft that also happens to breathe when you need it.
