Gear: Camelbak Arc 4 Hydration Belt

Camelbak’s newest run hydration belt is all about adaptability. The Podium Arc 4 ($60) has removable clip cages to hold up to four, snap-in 8-ounce bottles—vertically or horizontally—plus a zip pocket for gels and necessities. The waist belt is mesh and elasticized with rolled edges and plenty of reflective pops plus a stout Velcro closure.

Our Take: If you like running in a waist belt, this will make for an easy running partner. Even if waist belts aren’t your favorite (I confess to being more of a handheld or backpack runner), the comfortable fit of the waistband and the slim water bottle design may well make you a convert.

My biggest waist belt complaint is that they typically don’t stay put, but this was not an issue with the Arc 4 thanks to elastic webbing and a contoured fit. The cages’ adjustability means you can tweak bottle placement for easy accessibility and limited (or no) arm interference. Another bonus: No more fiddling around to find a bottle sleeve—just snap it into place for a secure fit. In addition, the narrow, BPA-free bottle is easy to hold and it has a locking sip top.

We tested this on runs, snowshoe outings, and quite a few XC ski days and were pleased with the versatility. Our preference was to use it with two bottles in the forward-most slots. Hands-free running (without the hassle of worrying about an errant hydration hose) was a real pleasure.
