Gear: Timbuk2 Tartine Tote

I’m a sucker for a big, haul-it-all bag. Frankly, the bigger the better. If I could get away with toting around my carry-on suitcase, I probably would.

But, I have excuses for my excess. I’m a mom of a four-year-old who requires a cache of supplies—snacks, water bottles, hand wipes, coloring books, extra socks, you name it. Plus, I’m a mountain biker, a runner, and a yogi who sometimes needs to also stuff my own stuff in a behemoth bag, along with the occasional 17-inch laptop or iPad (and sometimes both). You can see where I’m coming from. Can’t you? Nevermind the fact that my daughter’s best friend’s mother always shows up with a handbag into which my own wallet wouldn’t even fit. I find peace of mind knowing that I’m prepared for anything, including getting to toddler tumbling class, hitting the mat, or crossing the Arctic.

Which is exactly why I fell in love with the new Timbuk2 Tartine Tote bag (starting at $71, depending on customization options chosen). “Ample” is an understatement when it comes to describing the Large version of this spectacular tote (also available in Medium), which measures in at 18″ x 14″ x 6 with a volume of 1,434 cubic inches.

Part of Timbuk2’s new women’s collection, the Tartine Tote is a classic zip-top tote with a wide, open space to stack up your essentials. It also has several internal pockets, including a large, zippered pocket for the items you want to keep in check. A mesh water bottle holder also keeps spills at bay. A padded, protective laptop sleeve is also strategically placed inside—it is designed for a 15-inch laptop but I simply place my own 17-inch laptop in a thin sleeve and store it vertically in the same space. One large external pocket is perfect for slipping in your smartphone plus a pack of tissues.

One of the best features this bag offers is that it is customizable with a wide range of fabric and color choices. Pick your own material—ballistic, performance, or specialty. And choose from a modern palette of colors and prints—you can mix and match colors and fabrics on the main body, bag bottom, trim, and front pocket.

Made in San Francisco, the Timbuk2 Tartine Tote also has a waterproof TPU liner. I wondered whether its soft, 28-inch shoulder straps would prove flimsy (and stay in place). But, they’ve valiantly held up to the test of time and have not once slipped off my shoulder, no matter how massive the internal load. A bonus: this bag has a lifetime warranty offered by the folks at Timbuk2.
