News: Garage Grown Gear Launches for Ground-up Businesses

Innovators that love the outdoors inspire the sweetest outdoor gear. Their experiences on the slopes, trails, and waves inspire creative new products—and as long as an idea is strong, turning the basement into a designated workspace isn’t an unprofessional approach.

Case in point: entrepreneur Amy Hatch started Jackson Hole Packraft & Packraft Rentals Anywhere, a packrafting rental company, from her garage just outside of Jackson, WY. Hatch sees—and personally knows—the value of ground-up, independent companies in the outdoor industry, and how tough it can be for those independent brands to connect with consumers.

Now, four years later, she’s launching a second endeavor to help homegrown businesses. Garage Grown Gear is an online magazine, directory, and e-commerce store for high-performance grassroots gear. The site’s intention is to connect consumers with companies, and vice versa. Ergo, the companies can worry less about marketing and continue to do what they do best—inventing really cool gear.

Like many gear inventors, Hatch’s research began with her own love for the outdoors. “My parents hiked me to the bottom of the Grand Canyon twice before I was two years old and they strapped skis to my feet as soon as I could walk.  This pretty much set the stage for the rest of my life,” she says.

Born and raised in Colorado, Hatch attended Alaska Pacific University before she and her husband Cory moved to Victor, ID, 26-miles west of Jackson. It’s the perfect playground for all of her passions: mountain biking, packrafting, backpacking, running, and skiing. “I get so much out of each of these activities, but must admit that skiing is my first and primary love,” she says. “I’ve built my whole life around it, living 10 to 20 minutes away from Teton Pass’ world-class backcountry skiing.”

But, her running accomplishments have definitely earned her a spotlight. At the age of 23, Hatch ran her first 10K and then said, ‘Why not run a marathon?’ To test the waters, she ran 28 miles two weeks prior to the race, then signed up for the Mayor’s Midnight Sun Marathon. She crossed the finish line with a 3-hour, 49-minute, 53-second time.

Her running energy snowballed into a 50-mile race the following summer, and then the Leadville Trail 100 Run a year later. Beyond trail marathons and ultramarathons—including running the Bighorn Trail 50 Mile race when she was unknowingly pregnant—Hatch has also topped-out several of her own long distance running goals including a rim to rim to rim Grand Canyon run, and running up and over the Teton Mountains.

“I’ve shifted gears again to focus on adventure racing. I’m planning to do my first two this summer,” Hatch says.
