Sustain: Recycled Toppers

I currently own a pair of jeans with a hole so large that half of my left buttock can be viewed quite readily through the tatters, yet I refuse to give these pants up. Anneka Herdon, a master seamstress in Durango, Colorado, has a ready solution: hats.

Faced with parting with her own beloved—and busted—pair of Carhartt’s in 2009, she decided to upcycle them. The result was a cap with a small brim and panel-style top that was crushable, washable, reversible, and—bonus—cute. Soon, girls and guys alike were asking for their very own recycled hats, and her hat company Recaps was born.

Now Herndon hand crafts one-of-a-kind hats out of recycled clothing (custom orders welcome); Recaps’ hip lids can be spotted in the retail shops (and streets) of mountain towns across the West. We can’t think of a better solution for old pants—or a bad hair day.
