New Study Reveals the Most Dangerous Sports

Is your sport of choice dangerous? According to a recent study of orthopedic surgeons and physiotherapists in the UK, the answer is “probably.”

The study revealed that, of those surveyed, 87% said they believed those who take part in winter sports of some kind do not prepare their bodies enough and therefore run the risk of developing an injury. The most dangerous sports — i.e. those sports causing the most injuries — were ranked in the following order, with two highly popular winter sports taking home first and second place:

Skiing (98%)

Snowboarding (86%)

Football (55%)

Running (50%)

Rugby (39%)

Ice Skating (25%)

Cycling (18%)

Ice Hockey (18%)

Triathlon (14%)

Horse Riding (11%)

To ward off sports injuries, Jules Ferreira, Physiotherapy Manager at BMI The Princess Margaret Hospital in Windsor, UK, advises “Build up fitness levels over an appropriate period of time rather than rushing into anything. Reasonable fitness levels are vital for any intensive activity. Being at a good fitness level before you begin any winter sport is important and I would recommend working on fitness first for anyone about to take up something like skiing or snowboarding.

Ferreira also recommends the following, simple injury prevention measures, including:

• Learn the correct technique before setting out on your own and buy or rent the right equipment

• Always warm up and cool down

• Make stretching a part of your routine

• Rest between training sessions

• Have an appropriate training schedule

• Hydrate and eat well

• Use all the right safety equipment (helmets, goggles, body armor, you name it, it can’t hurt)
